Eating the Alphabet

Eating the Alphabet: Fruits & Vegetables from A to Z
by Lois Ehlert

We borrowed this book from the library for our unit on vegetables.  Of course, it was loaded with all my son’s favorite fruits and vegetables: apples, bananas, corn, etc.  What I loved was that the book also introduced veggies that he (and sometimes I) had never heard of like kohlrabi, quince, and ugli fruit.  The last couple pages of the book are a glossary with a short paragraph on each of the 75 different foods giving more information, including: color, flavor, growing region, and even history.  The pages are covered in beautiful watercolor depictions of the vegetables.  We were especially excited to find some foods we had eaten, but rarely read about, like pomegranate and kiwifruit.  After reading the book we’ll check our local produce section for some of the more exotic fruits and maybe even buy a few to try!
