Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel
By: Virginia Lee Burton
Persistance, stewardship, ambition and flexibility this book covers a wide range of values. As with most good books our emotions went from excitement to dismay, sadness to hope, pride to concern, and finally contentment. Transportation books are almost always a hit and this classic is no exception. We loved following Mike and Mary Anne from their glory days to hard times and finally a new lifestyle. I enjoyed teaching my son about a different time period; when milk was delivered to your door, doctors made house calls and their was only one telephone per town. (He found that pretty hard to believe!) We’ve read this book over and over. He has several lines memorized and has picked up new vocabulary words: canal, skyscraper, cellar, etc. We highly recommend this book!!
